Air Filters
What Kinds of Air Filters are There?
In most cars, trucks, and SUVs, there are two. One is for the cabin and the other is for the engine.
What Does a Cabin Air Filter Do?
The cabin filter keeps pollen, mold spores, and other allergens out of the ducts in the heater and AC system. That way, they stay away from the many parts that make up both, not to mention off your vehicle's vents and out of its interior.
What Does an Engine Air Filter Do?
The engine filter keeps infiltrates out of the air intake. That means everything from dirt and road debris to sand, insects, and more. Doing so, it keeps them out of the rest of the motor, too.
What are They Made of?
Usually, either cotton, synthetic paper, metal, or foam, which is either flat, circular, or cylinder-shaped and pleated to trap contaminants better. Some (the semi-permanent or permanent kind), you can wash and reuse many times, meaning you don't need to replace them as often.
What are the Signs They Need to be Changed?
The most obvious are airflow obstructions (usually indicating clogs) and damaged or worn-out media. Others include:
- A lit Check Engine light and/or other warnings on the dash
- Black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe
- Engine misfires and other strange engine noises
- Engine power loss
- Trouble accelerating
- Worsening gas mileage
- Whistling or other unusual sounds coming from the interior vents
- A state or dirty smell in-cabin
When Should You Replace Them?
When you see the symptoms mentioned above. Otherwise, every 12,000 to 15,000 miles -- in other words, annually. You can take care of it every 30,000 miles at most, but it's inadvisable to let the job go that long.
For more info on what to do, plus further instructions on when to do it, consult the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. It'll have all the details. Before you order a new set of air filters, though, be sure they're both genuine.
