Alternators
What is an Alternator and What Does it Do?
Alternators are critical parts of the charging systems in all vehicles -- ones without which they wouldn't run at all. What they do is transform mechanical energy into electrical energy -- in other words, turn the movement of parts into electricity. In doing that, they charge vehicle batteries, run dash lights, instrumentation, power windows, and electronics, and power other electrical systems galore -- steering systems and windshield wipers, for instance.
How Does One Work?
It's part of a process, one that begins with the engine and serpentine and drive belts, employs a pulley and a rotor shaft, and ends with the movement of magnetic coils. This creates a magnetic field; a rectifier captures its energy as AC power and converts the current to DC power. The resulting charge, a voltage regulator manages.
Why Do They Fail?
Usually, because their parts have degraded or broken down, the alternator belt has been overtightened, an incompatible accessory has been installed, or a jump-start's been done incorrectly. To make things worse, that failure often happens without warning.
What are the Signs One's Going Bad?
The most obvious are alternator and battery warnings on the dash, lighting malfunctions, and erratic electronics activity. Other symptoms include:
- Engine squeaks
- A dead battery
- A burning smell under the hood, usually near the battery or alternator
- Alternator fluid leaks
See any of these? You should inspect your alternator immediately. Then, do a charging system test. Replace any problematic parts, if not the entire alternator -- whatever the results call for.
When Should You Change One Otherwise?
Every 80,000 to 150,000 miles, or about every 7 years. For more info, plus instructions on what to do, when to do it, and usually, how to do it, check the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. It'll have all the details.
However, before you order a new alternator, be sure it's genuine.
Why Buy Genuine OEM?
